SEO for Nonprofits: 10 Steps for the AI Search Era

Misty mountains overlaid with a glowing hexagon grid, a few cells lit gold, like a map of where a nonprofit can be found

SEO for nonprofits is the work of helping the people who care about your cause find you when they search. In 2026 that means two places at once: classic search results and the answers AI engines write.

Why Nonprofit SEO Looks Different Now

Google still sends nonprofits a lot of traffic, but more searches now end with an AI summary at the top of the page, and more people skip the search engine entirely and ask ChatGPT or Perplexity. Those answers draw on the same web, with extra weight on trusted nonprofit sources. A strong SEO foundation helps you in both places.

Here are ten steps, roughly in the order we recommend tackling them.

1. Know Your Four Audiences

Donors, volunteers, funders, and program participants search differently. Write down the five questions each group asks most. Every step below should serve one of those questions.

2. Make Sure Search and AI Crawlers Can Reach Your Site

Check that your website platform and host are not blocking crawlers. Confirm that Googlebot, Bingbot, and AI crawlers like GPTBot and PerplexityBot are allowed in your robots.txt file, and that your site loads over HTTPS.

3. Build a Page for Every Program

One page per program, answering what, who, where, when, cost, how to join, and outcomes. These pages rank for specific searches, get quoted by AI engines, and make strong landing pages for Google Ad Grants.

4. Turn Your Volunteer Page Into a List of Real Opportunities

List actual roles with schedules, age requirements, location, and a sign-up link. "Volunteer with us" is not searchable. "Saturday food sorting shifts for teens 14 and up in Glendale" is.

5. Write Plain Answers at the Top of Each Page

Lead with one or two sentences that directly answer the page's main question. Both Google's featured results and AI engines lift these sentences.

6. Add an FAQ Built From Real Questions

Collect the questions your front desk, volunteer coordinator, and development staff hear every week. Answer them on the relevant pages and mark them up with FAQ structured data.

7. Add Nonprofit Structured Data

Use NGO or Organization schema on your homepage with your legal name, address, logo, and links to your official profiles. Add Event schema for fundraisers and volunteer days.

8. Update Candid, Charity Navigator, and Your Google Listing

Your Candid profile, Charity Navigator page, GreatNonprofits listing, Google Business Profile, and Bing Places listing should all match your website: same name, programs, leadership, address, and hours. Engines treat agreement across sources as a sign of trust.

9. Earn Mentions From Partners and Local Media

Ask partner organizations, sponsors, schools, and community foundations to list and link to you. Pitch local media when you launch a program or reach a milestone. These mentions are among the strongest signals for both rankings and AI recommendations.

10. Track Questions, Not Just Rankings

Once a month, ask Google, ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity your most important supporter questions and record the results. Use this sheet:

NONPROFIT SEARCH CHECK (one row per question)

Month: ________

Audience: Donor / Volunteer / Funder / Program participant
Question: ______________________________________________________________

Google results page 1? Yes / No Google AI summary names us? Yes / No
ChatGPT names us? Yes / No Perplexity names us? Yes / No
Details correct? Yes / No What was wrong: ______________________
Other organizations named: ____________________________________________
